Description of the crisis
The severe El-Niño cycle in late 2023 brought flooding and landslides in several regions and resulted in the deaths of at least 89 people, destroying thousands of homes. But the rains have continued and escalated into 2024 further exacerbating the crisis. In a statement to Tanzanian Parliament on April 25, 2024, the Prime Minister announced that over 200,000 people and 51,000 households had been affected by rains and flooding since January. In addition to reporting the deaths of 155 and 236 injured due to flooding, the Prime Minister has warned of continued rain and that people should immediately start to move to higher ground. The Pwani and Morogoro regions remain the most affected areas based on preliminary assessments. However, significant flooding events have also occurred in Mbeya, Lindi, Katavi, Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions in addition to the four regions affected in November-December 2023.
