BACKGROUND
ACHIEVE is a seven-year (2019-2026), USAID-funded global project to reach and sustain HIV epidemic control among pregnant and breastfeeding women, adolescents, infants, and children. In Tanzania, ACHIEVE supports orphans and vulnerable children, provides technical assistance to strengthen social welfare systems, and strengthens capacity of local partners that sustain services at the community level. The project also implements PEPFAR’s flagship HIV prevention project, DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored and Safe). In 2023, USAID added global health security to the project’s scope of work to help Tanzania prepare for and respond to global pandemics and disease outbreaks.
CHALLENGE
Tanzania has made progress across the country in improving the health and wellbeing of people living with HIV. However, there is a disparity in HIV outcomes among children and adolescents, as compared to adults. To build upon these gains and address disparities, youth must learn about HIV and other health services, know how to access those services, and make positive health choices.
GOALS
- Increase access to HIV-inclusive services in supported councils to improve the health and social wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children.
- Strengthen the capacity of local organizations to manage and implement orphans and vulnerable children and DREAMS interventions.
- Strengthen the capacity of the national- and community-level social services workforce, systems, and structures to ensure quality services for orphans and vulnerable children, at risk adolescent girls and young women, and people living with HIV.
- Strengthen the capacity of local organizations to manage and implement orphan and vulnerable children interventions.
- Improve the health, wellbeing, and protection of orphans and vulnerable children and youth in communities with high levels of HIV.
