OVERVIEW

The Burundi Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) 2017 articulates the regional protection and humanitarian needs of an anticipated 534,000 Burundian refugees by 31 December 2017 and outlines the inter-agency response strategy and financial requirements of 30 agencies responding across four major countries of asylum: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

Nearly 100,000 Burundi refugees fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda in 2016 alone, and the flight trend continues. Despite massive regional needs, the 2016 RRRP was only 50% funded. The shortfall in resources, combined with limited available camp space, is mounting pressure on reception capacities of hosting states. As the crisis moves into its third year, the refugee response will continue to provide emergency assistance to the new arrivals and provide care and maintenance for those already in camps, while also seeking avenues to improve livelihood opportunities for refugees and host communities.
