In July, the UK government announced the end to the UK-Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership and the resumption of asylum processing, including for those previously subject to removal to Rwanda.

On 12 July, UNHCR published its Recommendations to the UK Government on restoring access to, and reforming, the asylum system and strengthening resettlement, local integration and international cooperation.

UNHCR, in collaboration with the UK Home Office and IOM, welcomed the arrival of 892 Afghan refugees resettled from Pakistan between March - April 2024.

Refugee Week 2024

In June, UNHCR marked the UK’s 26th Refugee Week with engagements across the country. UNHCR met local government in Manchester, civil society and refugees to mark the showing of UNHCR’s A Great British Welcome exhibition, and sponsored the flagship award at the Welsh Refugee Council’s ‘Nation of Sanctuary’ Awards. UNHCR also met the Scottish Government’s Equalities Minister in Edinburgh, as well as parliamentarians, civil society and refugees, and presented an award at the Scottish Refugee Media awards in Glasgow. In London, UNHCR spoke at a Sanctuary Foundation event at the British Library.
