WFP IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING THE EXPORT OF GRAIN AND OTHER FOODS FROM UKRAINE - A VITAL SOURCE OF FOOD FOR MUCH OF THE WORLD.
Ukraine’s agricultural exports are a vital source of food for countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Before the war, its food exports fed 400 million people each year. Due to the competitive pricing of its food products, as well as its strategic location for WFP operations, Ukraine has long been one of WFP’s largest suppliers of wheat, vegetable oil and peas.
Since the onset of the full-scale war, Ukraine’s food exports have suffered significant setbacks. The closure of Black Sea ports in 2022 severely limited Ukraine’s export capacity, sending a shockwave through global food markets and contributing to a sudden rise in global food prices. In 2024, attacks on Black Sea ports and grain storage facilities continue to disrupt the flow of food commodities and pose a threat to global food security.
Since July 2022, WFP has directly supported Ukrainian food exports to food-insecure countries by chartering vessels under the now-expired Black Sea Grain Initiative and under the Grain from Ukraine initiative.
