“We Know People Are Waiting for Us” - Statement by CARE Ukraine on Potential Peace Talks and the Need for a Full Ceasefire

CARE Ukraine welcomes diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving just and lasting peace in Ukraine. We strongly believe that an immediate ceasefire is essential to save lives, improve access for humanitarian aid and support affected communities to begin the painful process of rebuilding after three years of conflict.

“As a humanitarian organization working daily in frontline areas of Eastern and Southern Ukraine, we witness the lethal impact of this war firsthand. Constant shelling is destroying homes, hospitals and schools - leaving people without access to drinking water, medical care, and basic social services. We can only imagine the situation in villages and towns that have remained inaccessible due to active hostilities. It is hard to speak about the psychological state of people who have been living under constant shelling for over three years – they are experiencing deep exhaustion, anxiety, and fatigue that have become part of their daily lives. We are waiting for a ceasefire so CARE and our partners can immediately reach these people, and we are already mobilizing resources to respond,” said Harris Nyatsanza, Deputy Country Director, CARE Ukraine.

CARE Ukraine and its national partners, including the organization Avalyst, have extensive experience working in frontline communities. Avalyst was one of the first organizations to deliver humanitarian aid in Sviatohirsk after it was retaken by Ukraine in June 2022. In Pokrovsk, Avalyst operated a community center supported by CARE, which remained active until the frontline approached within just 15 kilometers of the city.

“We are ready to return to communities that have gone without support for too long. Our specialists have experience working in extremely challenging conditions and are already preparing to resume operations in areas where constant shelling has made aid delivery impossible. We know people are waiting for us - and we have a moral obligation not to leave them behind. The only thing holding us back is ongoing shelling, and we call for it to stop,” emphasized Yevheniia Afonina, Program Manager with Avalyst.

CARE Ukraine calls on all parties to respect their obligations under International Humanitarian Law, secure an immediate and lasting ceasefire, and guarantee safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to all civilians in need. We also stress that women, women’s rights defenders, and survivors of conflict must have a seat at the negotiation table - their voices are vital in shaping a just and inclusive peace process for Ukraine.
