WATER PUMPING STATIONS DE-ENERGISED IN LYSYCHANSK

The WASH Cluster was informed this morning (29th May 2017) that Lysychansk Vodocanal (LVK) are facing serious issues with two Pumping Stations de-energized, due to the debts owed to the Luhansk Energy Company (LEO):

  • Borovska Pumping station was de-energized. In result, 1 school, 1 kindergarten and 80 accounts (approximately 200 people) are without water now.

  • Pumping station in RTI district (Lysychansk city) was de-energized. As a result, about 25,000 to 30,000 people, four schools (No 12, 13, 27, 30), three Kindergartens (around 600 children total) and Lysychansk city children's hospital are without water.

Given the fact that the school holidays have started, the children in most schools should not be affacted (unless there are exams being taken or other reasons for the schools to be used). However some risks apply to normal people who may drink lesser quality water, and kindergartens which may struggle to stay open. The children hospital is especially likely to need assistance.

The WASH Cluster is in touch with implementing partners, OCHA and with other clusters, as well as with LVK, to consider all options for support, without undermning the government process.
