SHELLING AT DONETSK FILTER STATION DURING HARVEST CEASEFIRE
Today, Wednesday 25th July 2018, the WASH Cluster was informed that staff of Donetska Filter Station (DFS) identified two new shell craters this morning, within the territory of the DFS after a night of shelling (staff took cover in the bomb shelter on several occasions). The first shell hit was near Sedimentation Tank No.1 (coarse sand and gravel is removed from the incoming water here), and the second hit was on the earth bank of the clean water tank No.2 (where drinkable water is stored). Fortunately, there was no serious damage and DFS continue to operate as normal, however the management of Voda Donbasa and staff of the DFS are concerned, given the lack of incidents since the “Harvest ceasefire” started on 1st July 2018.
In addition, yesterday (24th July) staff of the DFS identified a damaged tree just outside the area of the filter station, near the main entrance. The road was also reportedly damaged by shrapnel.
Donetsk Filter Station supplies water to the following settlements: Avdiivka, Kruta Balka, Vasylivka, Mineralne, Yakovlivka, Verkhniotoretske, part of Yasynuvata and western areas of Donetsk city, and it officially provides water in total to 378,983 people (May 2018 figures from Voda Donbasa).
The WASH Cluster is in touch with VD and will inform partners about any needs and updates, and will coordinate any additional need for water trucking.
