MAJOR LEAK IN TREATED WATER PIPELINE CROSSING LINE OF CONTACT
On the morning of 4th January Toretsk department of Voda Donbasa (VD) water company reported that treated water stopped reaching the city. Major leaks in the main water pipeline from Horlivka Filter station #2, in the Non-Government Controlled Areas (NGCA) to Toretsk city, in the Government Controlled Area (GCA) were identified later in the day by VD a crew. The pipe passes through the settlements Pivdenne, and Zalizne. Due to huge losses of treated water the management of the water company decided to stop pumps, which normally send potable water to all these civilian communities. The cause of the leaks is unknown and cannot be clarified until VD will receives a Window of Silence (WoS) to initiate repair works, hopefully on 5th January.
The volume of treated water supplied, by the damaged pipe, from Horlivka Filter Station #2 to Toretsk and other settlements is normally 34,000 m3/day. Officially Horlivka Filter station #2 supplies water to more than 45,000 people in GCA areas (according to Voda Donbasa figures), via the damaged pipe. These people are currently without their normal water source.
A Window of Silence was requested on 4th January. After demining works, VD will assess the leaking pipeline and will inform how much time need VD crews for practical repairs.
The WASH Cluster is in touch with Voda Donbasa and will inform about any specific needs after assessment of the area by Voda Donbasa
