SHELL EXPLOSIONS NEAR LARGE WATER PIPELINE REPAIR CREWS

On Wednesday 26th February (14.00 Kyiv time), repair crews working on the South Donbass Waterway (SDWW) near Pisky reported shell strikes landing an estimated 400m to 700m from their location. Thirteen workers were working on site at the time, having approached the pipelines from the GCA side.

Two new leaks of the South Donbass Waterway were reported to the WASH Cluster on 19th February, due to unknown reasons. 1400 mm diameter pipes were leaking in two locations: picket 382, near Pervomaiske and Pisky villages; and picket 368, not far away (pickets denote 100 m stretches of pipeline). In this case the shelling was reported close to picket 370.

Following 19th February Windows of Silence were granted fairly quickly by the JCCC in the Government Controlled Areas (GCA), however a WoS from the NonGovernment Controlled Areas (NGCA) side was only granted on Wednesday 26th , the same day as the incident.

Downstream of the incident the SDWW supplies water to approximately 600,000 people in Karsnihorivka, Mariinka (untreated), plus Volnovakha, Dokuchaievsk, Vugledar and Mariupol (treated water).

The WASH Cluster is in touch with Voda Donbasa and will inform partners of any additional information or needs.
