HIGHLIGHTS

  • The WHO Ukraine leadership retreat took place on 12 and 13 May to review the initial phase of the response, taking stock of challenges and lessons learned, and to focus on plans for the next period of action. Furthermore, the meeting allowed for in- person technical discussions on a range of topics.
  • Eastern Ukraine continues to face the fiercest fighting. Attacks were also reported in the southern, southeastern and central parts of Ukraine.
  • On 8 May over 170 civilians were evacuated from Mariupol (Donetsk oblast) and surrounding areas as part of the third evacuation operation coordinated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that, as of 3 May, just over eight million people have been displaced within Ukraine.
  • On 7 May the World Food Programme reported that it has supported over 3.4 million people across Ukraine with food and cash assistance since 24 February.
  • As of 6 May the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided 1.3 million people with access to safe water.
