On 8 December 2014 the United Nations specialized agencies (UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR and WFP facilitated by OCHA) in Ukraine and the International Relief & Development (IRD) delivered 12 tons of much needed humanitarian assistance to social institutions located in Slavyanoserbsk of Luhansk oblast.

The humanitarian convoy was organized in response to confirmed reports that the hospitals (in the psychiatric hospitals there are patients who have been there over 20 years) were in catastrophic conditions with no heat and little food - patients literally starving and in critical need for heaters, warm clothing, additional blankets, hygiene items, and many more. The humanitarian aid reached the patients who currently undergo treatment in Slavyanoserbsk general hospital, the Lyutikovskiy regional psychiatric hospital and the Slavyanoserbsk psychiatric hospital.

The humanitarian convoy has been delivered to the front line village of Triokhizbenka where the cargo needed to be off loaded by hand since the bridge, which is the dividing line between fighting parties has collapsed in two sections. 15 civilians from the Slavyanoserbsk administration and two from IRD moved the supplies across the bridge to four waiting ambulance vans from the hospital. “Some shelling could be heard in the distance, but both Ukrainian military and so-called LPR armed groups completely respected the humanitarian mission, observed a cease fire all day in all regions in and around Slavyonoserbsk. This is a region where daily shelling is the norm”, - said Oksana Mititenko, the IRD Country Representative in Ukraine. In addition, both parties expressed their gratitude to the UN and IRD for assisting families and patients in dire need, and expressed continued cooperation to the UN for future operations.
