Highlights

  • In May, UNICEF scaled up and systematized its response to airstrikes affecting children and families across the country. Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and case management were provided to 455 children in the immediate aftermath of strikes, of which 143 children received cash-for-protection assistance.
  • UNICEF and its partners established two new child-friendly spaces in frontline communities in Kharkiv region, and, in collaboration with the Ombudsperson’s office, one in Dnipropetrovsk. UNICEF and its partners now operate 193 such centres; in May, these centres were visited by 21,216 children.
  • In May, 123 UNICEF-supported Student Learning Support Centres reached 13,268 primary and secondary school-aged children. So far this year, 102,948 students have participated in remedial education. Remedial education is delivered through flexible online and face-to-face formats, with schools able to choose the modality best suited to their context. In-person sessions held in school shelters were especially vital in frontline areas, helping sustain student engagement under difficult conditions.
  • Water supply restoration remains a critical issue for communities close to the frontline, and those hosting an increased number of displaced people. In May, UNICEF delivered pipes, valves, welding machines and other supplies to water utilities, supporting an additional 52,607 people for a total of 2,308,127 people reached with safe water this year.
