The energy infrastructure has been substantially damaged
Since the war escalated in 2022, Ukraine's energy system has faced numerous challenges. Each subsequent year has introduced new problems, as Ukraine has lost energy capacities due to destruction or occupation. The country has put tremendous effort into restoring the power supply amidst these ongoing difficulties.
Ukraine's economy and population are suffering from the deteriorating situation in the energy sector. According to the UNDP report "Towards a Green Transition of the Energy Sector in Ukraine," the damage to the energy infrastructure has exceeded USD 10 billion. This damage, along with the loss of access to energy assets, has left 12 million people with limited or no access to electricity, disrupting internet communications, water supplies, and heating systems during the winter of 2022.
