Ukraine – Situation Update (ECHO Daily Flash of 25 April 2014)

Ukraine's interior ministry has stated that five pro-Russian separatists were killed by Ukrainian armed forces in the eastern town of Slovyansk on 24 April. US troops flew into 24 on April for a military drill, adding to US forces which arrived in Poland on 23 April. Russia has launched military drills in the Krasnodar region close to Ukraine.

UN agencies are currently revising their contingency plans. The work is facilitated by UNOCHA. The plans will focus more closely on recent development in Eastern region of Ukraine.

UNHCR reported that the latest data from the Ministry of Social Protection shows 6124 persons displaced. UNHCR said the exact number could not be verified given the fluidity of population movement.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has expressed concern with regard to the human rights situation in Ukraine including accountability and the rule of law, extra judicial arrests, inclusiveness, equal political participation and rights of minorities, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and the need to combat hate speech.
