Objective
To strengthen the capacity of the Government of Ukraine in delivering essential animal health services for livestock-keeping households, safeguarding livestock assets and protecting livelihoods in frontline oblasts.
Activities implemented
• Trained four SSUFSCP laboratory specialists in a ten-day training, and 50 SSUFSCP specialists in a cascade training on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory diagnostics for rabies detection.
• Organized trainings and events to raise awareness on rabies prevention with different target groups including 140 students specializing in veterinary medicine, forestry and hunting management; 60 veterinary professionals; and 50 hunting ground users.
• Developed key documents for SSUFFSCP, including a standard operating procedure and an instruction manual, and updated the State Standards of Ukraine on Methods of Rabies Diagnosis to recognize PCR as a diagnostic method for rabies detection.
• Procured and supplied 181 tonnes of essential disinfection materials to 23 regional SSUFSCP departments across Ukraine.
• Distributed 122 940 bovine spongiform encephalopathy test kits to seven key regions and distributed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay equipment for SSUFSCP laboratories in Mykolayiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.
• Conducted a needs assessment to develop a catalogue of eligible products for voucher programmes.
• Distributed veterinary vouchers worth USD 2 221 604 to 15 436 vulnerable households.
• Engaged 368 households in a post-distribution monitoring survey and conducted 11 focus group discussions with 152 beneficiaries to gather quantitative and qualitative data on the interventions’ outcomes.
