According to the Activity Matrix 2025, the Parent Activity SN301 “Humanitarian Repair” is divided among others into Sub-Activities SN301B - “Category I Repairs” (Humanitarian light and medium repairs) and SN301C – Category II (Heavy) Repairs (complex, capital).
This document provides recommended criteria and explanations for determining the type of repair, describing its features and key differences.
The document was developed to unify approaches to the classification of humanitarian repairs, ensure a clear distinction between different categories of repairs, and identify their key characteristics. It is intended to help all actors involved in the process correctly identify the type of repair. This will help improve the accuracy of the data used in activities, minimize the risk of errors, ensure proper reporting, and enhance coordination.
The key distinction between Category I and Category II repairs lies in the presence of structural damage to the building. Specifically, a repair is classified as Category II if it involves the restoration or intervention in load-bearing structures. Repairs that do not affect load-bearing elements are classified as Category I.
To facilitate the identification of the type of repair and to improve understanding of the key differences between Category I Repairs and Category II (Heavy) Repairs, the document provides:
• a comparative Table 1 of key differences.
• a comparison Figures 1 and 2 of the differences between buildings and damages for the restoration of which the appropriate type of repair can be applied
• scope of recommended works
