Context

Despite a period of relative frontline stability in Zaporizka oblast following the 2023 counteroffensive, 2025 has seen a renewed intensification of hostilities, with offensive operations escalating and limited advances by Russian forces reported west of Orikhove. The intensification of hostilities has been accompanied by long-range attacks (drones, rockets, shelling), which has led to an increase in civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and may trigger a new wave of displacement from the frontline areas. To better understand the current displacement dynamics in Zaporizka oblast, including conditions in frontline-adjacent settlements, the situation of recent evacuees, and the needs of vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing in collective sites, REACH Initiative conducted a rapid needs assessment in the city of Zaporizhzhia on 21–22 May 2025.
