Uganda hosts more than 1.6 million refugees testing the country’s response, resources, and openness. WFP has collaborated with the Government of Uganda and other partners to create opportunities for 100,000 refugees and host communities to progressively sustain themselves and reduce dependence on humanitarian assistance. The model targets 70 percent refugees and 30 percent nationals and promotes income diversification and alternative livelihoods as well as digital financial inclusion. The SRM is more cost-effective in the long run than cyclic humanitarian responses with the cost of investment anticipated to manifest tangible returns after the fourth year (compared to the cost of general food assistance), as beneficiaries transition towards self-reliance and reduced reliance on external assistance.
