The Uganda Market Price Update is produced by the Analysis, Monitoring and Evaluation (AME) Unit of the World Food Programme Uganda on a monthly basis. Price data collected by staff at WFP Sub offices in Moroto, Kotido, Kaabong and Nakapiripirit is analyzed along with price data from Gulu, Kampala, Mbarara, Soroti, Tororo, Lira and Mbale.
The update is divided into four sections; Karamoja markets, Price trends over one year, Other Markets and table on Price changes.

HIGHLIGHTS

KARAMOJA

  • The average retail price for maize grain and sorghum in April were high across Karamoja by 13% and 29% respectively compared to March. Nakapiripirit observed a significant increase in the price for Maize grain (29%), sorghum (57%) and beans (13%) due to increasing demands. In Kaabong, the average prices for maize grain, sorghum and beans were relatively stable and lower;  In April 2017, the average retail prices for maize grain and sorghum were significantly high compared to 2016 and the long term average (2013-16), indicating a continued increase in the cost of living for the poor and vulnerable households;

  • The terms of trade for both goats and wage rates against maize grain have continued to deteriorate, due to decreasing prices for goats and also an increase in the average prices for maize grain.
    REST OF THE COUNTRY  The average prices for maize grain, sorghum and beans were high in April 2017 by 18%, 17% and 10% respectively compared to March. The average price for sorghum was significantly higher in Soroti (32%) and Lira (26%) due to increasing demand from Karamoja;  Compared to 2016, the average prices for maize grain, sorghum, and beans remained high across the country by 68%, 49% and 23% respectively due to poor harvest in 2016. The increase in the average price for maize was more than half across all districts;

  • In May and June 2017, the average retail price for maize grain and beans are expected to reduce due to an anticipated first season harvest across the country.
