Uganda – Refugee Population Milestone (DG ECHO, UNHCR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 16 April 2026)

  • As of 13 April 2026, Uganda’s registered refugee population has officially surpassed the two-million mark, reaching 2,003,369 individuals. A verification exercise is scheduled this year to update and consolidate figures. On 5 February, Uganda ceased prima facie recognition and reverted to individual refugee status determination while opening the asylum process for all nationalities. Uganda hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa and one of the largest in the world.
  • Mass screenings reveal critical malnutrition levels among new arrivals. At the Kabazana Reception Centre, the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate has spiked to 25%, up from 9.2% at. Similar concerns have reoccurred at Lokung and Kiryandongo, where rates remain high. DG ECHO partners are providing treatment services for both severe and moderate acute malnutrition.
  • Measles outbreaks are confirmed in refugee-hosting districts including Adjumani, Kiryandongo, and Kikuube. Kiryandongo has recorded 154 cases since September 2025. In response to recent fatalities in Kikuube, the Ministry of Health has launched an emergency vaccination campaign targeting children aged 6–59 months.
