Notes

Since January 2024, Uganda has registered outbreaks of measles in 8 districts of Arua city, Kyenjojo, Kasese, Obongi, Yumbe, Hoima, Amuru and Yumbe. A total of 791 measles were detected with 58 laboratory confirmed, 733 epi-linked and 3 deaths. Overall, the regions affected are either bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo or refugee hosting districts.

Description

Uganda has registered measles outbreaks in eight districts/cities across the country since January 2024. The Ministry of Health conducted a rapid measles risk assessment which revealed that an estimated 41 districts are at high risk of measles, an additional 73 districts are considered at moderate risk of measles and other vaccine preventable diseases. This is a threat to the current progress Uganda has made to stop measles in the country. Data from all the measles outbreaks investigated indicates that the outbreaks are due to pockets of unimmunized or under immunized children, which is made further made worse by porous borders, free population movements and sub optimal active surveillance in some regions.
