1.1 Annual Inflation

The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending May 2016 increased to 5.4 per cent compared to the 5.1 per cent recorded during the year ended April 2016.

The driver for the Annual Headline Inflation was the Annual Core Inflation which registered 7.0 per cent for the year ending May 2016, compared to the 6.4 per cent recorded during the year ended April 2016. The increase in Annual Core Inflation is due to a rise in other goods Inflation of 7.4 per cent for the year ending May 2016 compared to the 6.7 per cent increase recorded during the year ended April 2016. In addition, Annual Services Inflation increased to 6.5 per cent for the year ending May 2016, compared to 5.9 per cent increase that was recorded during the year ended April 2016.

On the other hand, Annual Energy, Fuel and Utilities (EFU) Inflation decreased to 5.6 per cent for the year ending May 2016, compared to the 6.5 per cent recorded during the year ended April 2016. Similarly, the Annual Food Crops and Related Items Inflation decelerated to 5.0 per cent for the year ending May 2016, compared to an earlier deceleration of 4.2 percent recorded during the year ended April 2016. The deceleration in Annual Food Crops Inflation was due to the decline in the annual Vegetables Inflation to minus 8.1 per cent for the year ending May 2016 compared to the minus 6.1 per cent recorded during the year ended April 2016.
