1.0 INTRODUCTION

This is the first release following the general rebasing of the Uganda’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) based on 2009/10 reference period.

1.1 ANNUAL INFLATION

The Annual Headline Inflation for the year ending January 2016 declined to 7.6 per cent compared to the 8.4 per cent that was recorded for the year ended December 2015. The main driver was the Annual Food Crops Inflation which decreased to 12.3 per cent for the year ending January 2016, compared to the 16.0 per cent recorded for the year ended December 2015. In addition, the Annual Energy, Fuel and Utilities (EFU) Inflation decreased to 6.8 per cent for the year ending January 2016 compared to the 7.0 per cent recorded in December 2015. The Annual Core Inflation went down to 7.1 per cent for the year ending January 2016 compared to the 7.6 per cent registered during the year ended December 2015.

The decrease in Core Inflation was due to the annual Inflation for Other Goods and Services. In particular, Other Goods decreased to 8.0 per cent for the year ending January 2016 compared to the 8.7 per cent recorded for the year ended December 2015. Besides, Services declined to 5.8 per cent in January 2016 compared to the 5.9 per cent recorded for the year ended December 2015 (Table 6).
