Nairobi, 26 April 2025 – “I would like to congratulate the Government of Uganda and partners in successfully ending the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (SVD) outbreak in the country.
“Through strong leadership from the Ugandan Ministry of Health and excellent coordination with Africa CDC, UNICEF, WHO, and partners, and with financial support from the governments of Sweden and the United States, Uganda responded swiftly and effectively to isolate and treat patients, resulting in a low fatality rate. In addition, with systems already in place due to experience from previous Ebola outbreaks, tracing and isolating contacts of cases was instrumental in ending this outbreak, which was declared on January 30, 2025.
“This is nothing but a victory. We must especially applaud health workers, who were on the frontlines working in lockstep with the Ministry of Health to contain this deadly and highly contagious disease.
“UNICEF will continue to work with the Government and partners to further strengthen risk communication, community engagement, infection prevention and water, sanitation and hygiene systems. This will help prevent and respond to new outbreaks and mitigate the impact of communicable diseases and keep Uganda Ebola-free. By scaling up and ensuring the continuity of integrated essential services, we are protecting children and families, so they can thrive in a safe and healthy environment.”
