Ebola Outbreak Overview
On 30 January 2025, the Ugandan Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of Sudan Virus Disease (SVD)following the confirmation of a case at two national reference laboratories. SVD, caused by the Sudan virus (SUDV), belongs to the family of Ebola virus disease. It is highly lethal, with previous outbreaks showing a fatality rate between 41% and 70%. The absence of licensed vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of SVD makes the risk of potential serious public health impact high, but early supportive patient care and treatment may increase the chance of survival.
According to the WHO Risk Assessment and Grading, the SVD outbreak is high at national-Grade 02. Based on the currently available information, 7 districts including the Capital Kampala are at very high risk, and 11 others are at high risk.
