1. Ebola Outbreak Overview
Introduction
On 30 January 2025, the Ministry of Health of Uganda declared an outbreak of Sudan virus disease (SVD) following confirmation of a case from two national reference laboratories. The primary case started experiencing signs and symptoms on 19 January and died on 29 January at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. As of 28 February 2025, there have been Ten (10) confirmed cases of SVD, including two (2) death. Out of the ten confirmed cases, five (50%) are health workers and four (40%) are family members of the index case. For the remaining one case, investigations are ongoing to understand the linkages. As of 28 February, total of 299 contacts have been listed. Contacts of the last case are being investigated.
Sudan virus disease belongs to the same family as Ebola virus disease. It is caused by Sudan virus (SUDV). It is a severe disease with high case fatality from 41% to 70% in past outbreaks. The absence of licensed vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of SVD, makes the risk of potential serious public health impact high. However, early supportive patient care and treatment may increase the chance of survival. This marks the eighth Ebola outbreak in Uganda with the most recent one in 2022 which was contained within a record of 69 days. Uganda has the capacity and the experience to respond and contain this outbreak if timely technical and financial support is ensured by the UN and other partners.
