1. Situation in the Field:
The Total cumulative cases were 116, with 33 cumulative deaths (Case Fatality Rate of 28.4%)
A total of 265 out of 368 contacts (72%) have been followed up (112 in Kikyo and 153 in Bundibugyo). One alert case was detected in the process.
More contacts have been added onto the list and 7 contacts completed 21 days of follow up and were removed from the list.
2. Laboratory and Surveillance:
2 laboratory samples were collected from Bundibugyo and shipped to UVRI.
Out of 22 specimens previously sent to UVRI in Entebbe sent from Bundibugyo, 3 were positive (2 out of 14 on 11/12/07 and 1 out of 8 on 12/01/07). & specimens from other districts with alert cases were tested on the 2 days and all were negative.
The cumulative laboratory confirmed Ebola cases (by antigen or antibody tests) were 27
Suspected cases that refused admissions are being monitored from home and are still okay.
The good news is that all Samples from other districts (except the sample of the doctor from Bundibugyo who died in Mulago) were all negative. The epidemic is still localized to Bundibugyo, in 5 sub-counties.
3. Case Management and Infection Control:
There was no new admission in both Kikyo HC and Bundibugyo Hospital isolation camps; there was one death and one discharge from Kikyo; and no death and 5 discharges from Bundibugyo Hospital.
The total admissions are now 21 (10 patients in Kikyo and 11 in Bundibugyo Hospital).
The cumulative discharges since the outbreak was confirmed were 19.
There was one community death for which the burial team was called.
There are adequate supplies in both Kikyo and Bundibugyo
Training of some clinicians in case management to enable rotation and resting of clinicians is planned.
The infrastructural developments for Kikyo isolation camp were reported on course.
The biggest news is that Bundibugyo Hospital Isolation camp now has the required 16 nursing staff to run the 8 hour shifts. More nursing staff are volunteering to support the nursing care of patients in the isolation camp
4. Coordination - Collaboration:
NTF held a meeting today, a follow up meeting with Humanitarian Action donors was also held. The World bank staff requested for and got a presentation on Ebola from WHO. Uganda Medical workers Union attended the NTF.
District Task Force Meetings continue daily.
There was a meeting with the medical Superintendents of all Regional Hospitals; who were sensitized on Ebola, new guidelines for triage in all health facilities in the country, use of PPEs, and provided with kits of PPEs to enable them support investigation and response to alert or suspected cases in their regions.
