In a vibrant ceremony held in Kotido District, the People’s Republic of China, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), officially launched the Lean Season Response, delivering 1,610 metric tonnes of rice to support vulnerable communities across Karamoja, Uganda. The donation, which will benefit approximately 67,000 people, comes at a critical time as the region grapples with acute food insecurity driven by climate shocks and poverty.
The event was graced by Peter Lokeris, Uganda’s Minister for Karamoja Affairs, alongside delegations from the Chinese Embassy, WFP, and local government. The rice donation is part of China’s broader humanitarian and development support to Uganda, which includes $9 million in contributions to WFP programs over the past seven years.
