2, 247 people relocated to Bulucheke camp, more emeregency interventions needed in Western Uganda

Bududa/Butaleja/Western Uganda:2, 247 people in Bududa have been relocated to Bulucheke camp. All these have been registered by Uganda Red Cross Society.

More people are being relocated and registration is to continue, according to the URCS Mbale Region Team Leader Kevin Nabutuwa.

The URCS yesterday distributed 250 grams of maize flour and 50 grams of beans to each of the individuals. The food was provided by the WFP. The food distributed will last the affected people for six days.

Nabutuwa said the next food distribution in the camp is on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Four of the survivors that were rescued from the Bududa mudslide have died at Bukalasi health centre.

In Butalejja, the District Disaster Management Committee comprising various agencies like Uganda Red Cross, UNICEF, Save the Children has today (March 10, 2010) called for an emergency meeting to forge a way forward.

Four Sub-Counties namely Kachonga Mazimasa Kimuntu and Nawangofu have been affected by the floods; Kachonga and Mazimasa are the most affected. The URCS has distributed essential household items to 6,578 people.

According to Nabutuwa, the Mbale-Busolwa road has over flooded and the road is currently inaccessible.

In Tororo, river Malaba burst its banks causing flooding in Otukulu sub county affecting villages of Amoni in Nyanakoti parish, Asingye and Amoni in Malaba Town Council; the flooding has caused destruction to crops of about 250 households.

More emergency interventions have been planned for Butaleja, Tororo.

The URCS continues to receive contributions towards its sh2b appeal. Today, March 10, 2010, donations were received from Standard Chartered Bank: sh50m, NSSF: sh10m, Unilever: sh5m cash and sh5m in kind (anti-bacterial soap and blue band), Hotloaf: 500 loaves of bread, Uganda Olympic Committee: sh500, 000, Gulu University: sh1m, Bank of Uganda: sh20m.

In Western Uganda, Kasese district in Kyabarungira and Kisinga sub counties, 627 households (3,640 people) have been affected, with 78 houses damaged, crops and gardens washed away with running water and household items destroyed.

294 households have so far been relocated to Bughendero primary school.

In Kabale district, Butanda, Rubaya and Buhara sub counties, 26 houses have been destroyed by landslides and flooding. 3 people drown and died and bodies have not yet reported recovered.

17 households temporarily relocated to Rubaya Sub County from Buhara Sub County for an undefined period. The road leading to the two sub counties of Butanda and Rubaya is blocked.

805 people reported affected while crops and essential household items have been destroyed

In Kisoro, 332 households (2,324 people) in the sub counties of Busanza, Nyabwishenya, Kanaba, Murora and Nyarubuye have been affected with 2324 people

13 households were badly affected and the people displaced but not yet in a settled place

In Kabarole, 360 households (3, 873 people) have been affected by landslides. 13 houses and 3 bridges were washed away.

In Bundibugyo, 1,532 people in Kanara Sub County have been displaced. The URCS has completed assessments in the affected districts of Western Uganda and interventions are underway.
