HIGHLIGHTS

  • UNFPA is scaling up its services to reach those in dire need by engaging more mobile teams in earthquake response activities.

  • Around 8,900 individuals reached with life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) support including dignity and maternity kits in Türkiye’s earthquake-affected areas.

  • UNFPA’s appeal for the earthquake response is requesting $19.7 million and aims to reach 1.5 million individuals needing life-saving humanitarian support. Only 23 per cent of the appeal has been funded so far.

SITUATION UPDATE

  • Following the two earthquakes on 6 February, and the earthquake on 20 February, another 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred on 27 February in Malatya province, resulting in dozens more injured people.

  • 11 provinces were affected by the earthquakes in southeastern Türkiye, including Kahramanmaras, Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Şanlıurfa, with about 15.8 million inhabitants, including 1.7 million refugees.

  • Half a million people were evacuated from the affected provinces. Over 350.000 tents and 8.500 containers have been set up by the authorities to meet shelter needs in the affected provinces.

  • Around 45.000 people lost their lives in the earthquakes (as of 1 March).

  • Access to safe deliveries and post-natal care is a major concern as many health facilities are damaged or services were disrupted.

  • There is a high need for mobile and temporary service units and SRH supplies in the affected provinces.
