Türkiye, Syria - Earthquakes, update (DG ECHO, UN OCHA, GDACS, USGS, AFAD DEPREM, AFAD) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 February 2023)

An earthquake of 5.2 M (5.6 M as registered by AFAD) at a depth of 10 km occurred in Yesilyurt District (Malatya Province, southern Türkiye) on 27 February at 9.04 UTC (12.04 local time). The epicentre was located approximately 10 km south of Malatya City, and 160 km north-east of the 7.8 M earthquake occurred on 6 February. According to national authorities, one person died, 110 people have been injured, 32 rescued, and almost 30 buildings destroyed. In Syria, UN OCHA reports human and material damage across different locations, including at least 150 injured in Northwest Syria. According to AFAD, as of 24 February, 44,218 people died, and 528,146 others have been evacuated following the two earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.5 M of 6 February. In Syria, UN OCHA reports that more than 5,900 people have died, 8.8 million people have been affected, and over 10,000 buildings damaged or destroyed. Following Türkiye’s request for assistance, the mobilised search and rescue teams had been demobilised and the operations of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) are currently focusing on medical and in-kind assistance. In response to the request for assistance by the Syrian Embassy in Lebanon, the UCPM in-kind assistance is being channelled through Gaziantep and through Beirut, under the ERCC coordination.
