Situation Update
Plans are in place for 55,000 container homes, with a potential increase to 65,000. Authorities prioritizing beneficiaries based on vulnerability criteria for the allocation of prefabricated houses and planning the construction of new homes, presently targeting 35,000 households. In an effort to provide better services, authorities are consolidating both informal and formal tent sites, transitioning residents to container cities.
However, this formalization process encounters issues in certain areas where residents resist relocation. The decision-making process necessitates community participation and the involvement of partners/sectors. The unpredictable timeline for the formalization of settlements also creates difficulties, particularly for WASH activities. Demolition of buildings has led to infrastructure damage, impeding access to resources. Women, in particular, are unwilling to use shared shower areas, emphasizing the need for gender-segregated WASH facilities.
Access to potable water remains limited, as residents who were already reluctant to use tap water before the earthquake continue to resist using water tanks.
