SITUATION UPDATE

  • Death toll: 44,374 people have lost their lives due to the earthquakes
  • Displacement/Evacuations: 2.2 million people have left the area, of which 528,1463 people have been evacuated and relocated by Turkish authorities
  • People in shelters: 1.9 million people are living in tents and temporary shelter
  • Aftershocks: 9,136 aftershocks have occurred and continue
  • Building damage: 164,321 buildings collapsed or are heavily damaged (520,000 independent units)
  • Debris: 116 - 210 million tons of rubble were generated by the earthquakes (compared to around 13 million tons of rubble generated in the 1999 Marmara earthquake)

FUNDING UPDATE

The UN Flash Appeal (available in English and Turkish), launched on 16 February 2023 for US$1b to assist 5.2 million people affected by the earthquake by April 2023, is 7.2% funded as of 27 February 2023 with $72 million.

HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE UPDATE

The response to the earthquakes is being led by the Government of Türkiye, coordinated through Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) with the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) and other national partners.

As of 25 February 2023, AFAD reports that three International Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Teams remain active on the ground from two countries. As of 24 February, the Government of Türkiye has provided over 72.6 million hot meals, 30 million bottles of water and other food items distributed through TRC, AFAD, the Ministry of National Defense, the Gendarmerie, and local NGO partners via 370 mobile kitchens, as reported by AFAD.

In addition, the Government of Türkiye reports the provision of critical psychosocial support to a total of 911,942 affected people in four (4) Mobile Social Service Centers across Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye and Malatya provinces.

To meet the urgent shelter needs, authorities have set up 335,382 tents that were shipped by ministries as well as other national and international partners, according to the latest AFAD press release on 24 February.

As of 24 February, UNDP has sent 160 770-liter dumpster-size waste bins, 54,000 kg of quicklime, and 10,400 liters of disinfectant to support municipal authorities in collecting and moving waste; sanitizing the rubble; and providing clean water.

As of 24 February, UNFPA has reached 6,648 individuals with over 6,300 dignity and maternity kits as well as reproductive health commodities and services provided via 5 static service units and 7 mobile units in Adana, Diyarbakir, Hatay, Sanliurfa, and Adiyaman. Through UNFPA-supported service units in Mersin and Ankara, critical reproductive health services and services for survivors of violence against women and girls are also available for those who evacuated from the earthquake-affected areas.

Private Sector Contributions: The Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation, the local network of the OCHA- UNDP Connecting Business initiative, has reported in-kind and cash donations worth over US$11 million as of 21 February delivering 176 trucks with donations of food and non-food items. These items include over 21,000 blankets, 391 shelter containers, more than 1,000 tents and 15, 000 beds, 4 soup kitchens and 3 mobile kitchens, 100 portable toilets and bathrooms, 3 generators, 1,000 heaters to affected areas.
