SITUATION OVERVIEW
On 06 February 2023, a series of devasting earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria, with epicenters recorded in southern Türkiye. As of 17 February, more than 40,000 deaths have been confirmed across the two countries, with more than 100,000 people injured and over 50,000 buildings damaged or destroyed.
All of these numbers are expected to rise in the days and weeks ahead.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 18 million people have been directly affected by the disaster, and has requested nearly $1.4 billion to provide assistance to more than 10 million of the most affected.
The scale of devastation and humanitarian needs is catastrophic, as harsh weather and a protracted conflict in Syria further stress the population, local infrastructure, and basic services.
In response, IOM and its partners are committed to deliver urgently needed assistance and services to those most affected by this disaster. IOM Türkiye has a long history of successful partnerships and operations in the affected areas, with more than 1,370 staff delivering a wide range of programs nationwide.
To respond to immediate multisectoral needs on the ground, IOM is urgently appealing for $161 million in support.
