AmeriCares, the international and domestic disaster relief organization, and Welch Allyn, a world-wide medical diagnostisc manufacturer, have partnered in the purchase of medical diagnostic equipment for hospitals and clinics in Istanbul and Ankara that were destroyed or damaged by two earthquakes in 1999. The total value of the equipment is approximately $1,200,000, inclusive of a two year products warranty. The devastating earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey in August and November, with magnitudes of 7.4 and 7.2. Between them the quakes killed over 17,700, injured 49,000, left 200,000 homeless and caused over $22 billion worth of damage.
Peter H. Soderberg, President & CEO of Welch Allyn states, "The people of Welch Allyn are committed to our mission of being the predominant provider of diagnostic equipment to front-line providers worldwide. Our values include helping people, providers and communities in need without the resources to provide adequate care. We hope this donation will help our friends in Turkey in their time of rebuilding."

AmeriCares is extremely grateful to the three Turkish Welch Allyn distributors, Mr. Bora Atakol (Ata Medikal, Istanbul), Mr. Temir Ozbayoglu (Temsa Saglik, Ankara) and Mr. Hayk H. Celalyan (MikroOptik, Istanbul) who assisted Americares in identifying the hospitals and clinics for this initiative; Dr. Sait Tarhan of the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota, an AmeriCares medical volunteer who provided his medical expertise, and Bahattin Erdinc of the Topkapi Rotary Club of Istanbul who warehoused the equipment in Istanbul in addition to providing logistical support and identifying the recipient institutions. AmeriCares relief experts and medical personnel will oversee the installation of the equipment in early March.
