Highlights
● On 26 May 2014, AFAD - the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Government of Turkey - announced that the total number of Syrians registered and assisted in 22 camps located in 10 provinces was 220,956. AFAD reported that during the period of 25-26 May 2014, a total of 228 Syrians were admitted and registered in the camps and 333 Syrians voluntarily returned to Syria.
● During a visit to Nusaybin camp on 26 May 2014, UNHCR team witnessed a group of 26 new arrivals approach the camp, requesting to be admitted to the camp. The camp officials, in consultation with the local authorities, admitted the new arrivals. A UNHCR team talked to some of the new arrivals who stated that they had come from Aleppo and had crossed the border at Kilis. Upon crossing the border, the group was reportedly taken to Senyurt where they were fingerprinted and referred to the Nusaybin camp by police.
● In Nizip town, after the deployment of a mobile coordination center there, the police started to re-register the non camp Syrians who were previously enumerated (about 19,000) and to register new arrivals with the new registration software. As of 23 May, the officials informed UNHCR that they have already registered more than 4,000 Syrians in the new system. The officials added that the Syrians are requested to provide a document from the local muhtars certifying their residence at their given address.
● In Viransehir camp, the officials were informed by AFAD HQ that 24 Syrians would be transferred from Kahramanmaras . On Tuesday 27 May, the camp officials confirmed that only 14 of the Syrians had arrived and that they were admitted and registered in the camp.
● In Adana, camp officials informed that they have also started to register non-camp Syrians in the camp in addition to the registration being done at the mobile coordination center in the city center. For those families and individuals who are to be registered in the camp, AFAD provides daily transportation to and from the camp for registration. Officials are reportedly transporting 25-30 people to the camp per day for registration. As of 26 May 2014, about 6,580 Syrians have been registered by the police in Adana, 139 of whom were registered in the camp's registration facilities.
