Highlights

● On 19 August, AFAD, the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Turkey's Government, announced that the total number of Syrians registered and assisted in the 22 camps located in 10 provinces was 217,875. AFAD reported that from 18 to 19 August, a total of 380 Syrians were admitted and registered in the camps and 292 Syrians have voluntarily returned to Syria.

● In Karkamis camp, officials informed UNHCR that UNICEF will donate 05 containers (80m2 each) to be used as class rooms. The camp management is planning to use two of them for kindergarten classes and the other three for high school classes. Reportedly, there is a very high demand from the residents for kindergarten level education and they have already started to register the children at kindergarten age. The camp management also requested four additional teachers for such classes.

● In Harran camp, officials and the school manager informed UNHCR that the MoNE (Ministry of National Education) will hold a meeting in Ankara on 22-23 August with the participation of school managers of all camps. Reportedly in the meeting the state officials will discuss the education system for the Syrian children in the camps. It is reported that the MoNE plans to draft a new circular on the implementation of the educational system for Syrian children.

● In Akcakale camp, officials informed that as per instruction from AFAD, they are not allowing visitors to meet relatives in their tents in the camp. Camp officials informed that instead they have now converted a big tent outside the camp which was used as coordination center for the registration of non-camp Syrian, to be used as a visitors tent. Previously the camp officials were allowing the visitors to meet their relatives in their tents for up to 2 days, however many of the visitors were not only overstaying this period, but were refusing to leave the camp and later requesting to be provided seperate tents, beyond the camp's capacity.

● In Ceylanpinar camp a UNHCR team was informed that 9 families (54 persons) were in the waiting area, of whom 4 families were admitted as some tents became available. Since then two more new arrival families approached the gate on 18 Aug 2014.
