Cooperation protocol signing ceremony on vocational training programme within the scope of “Strengthening Social Stability in Southeast Anatolia Project”, executed by UNDP and GAP Regional Development Administration and funded by The Government of Japan, was held on February 2nd, in GAP Regional Development Administration, Şanlıurfa. Under the scope of “Employment and Livelihood Opportunities” component of the project that will be carried out in cooperation among Harran University Turkish Teaching Research and Implementation Center (TÖMER), Harran University Continuing Education and Implementation Center (GAPTAEM), GAP Agricultural Training Center (GAPTAEM), Şanlıurfa Chamber of Artisan and Tradesmen Training Centers (ŞESOB), 1,375 Syrian and 375 Turkish citizens will be provided with 75 vocational training programme on industry, services and agriculture as well.
The protocol signing ceremony was held with the participation of Sadrettin Karahocagil, GAP Regional Development Administration President, UNDP representatives, Prof. Dr. Ramazan Taşaltın, Rector of Harran University, Mehmet Şefik Bakay, ŞESOB President, İbrahim Halil Çetiner, GAPTAEM Director and the protocol was signed by the corporations where the trainings will take place.
The project is composed of two components that aim to contribute to the social stability in Southeast Anatolia.
The “Employability and Livelihoods” component aims at contributing to the employability of different segments of Syrian population and host communities through provision of vocational training and competency development programmes that the local agricultural sector, manufacturing sector and the services sector are in need as well as improving local value chains and local production ecosystems and infrastructures for diversified and enhanced livelihood opportunities. 1,375 Syrian and 375 Turkish citizens will be provided by the vocational trainings as part of the project whose budget is over 3,5 million TL.
Improving Livelihood Opportunities with Turkish Courses and Life Skills Trainings
The content of the vocational trainings was defined by drawing from the outputs of the workshop organized with multi-shareholders including HARÜSEM, TÖMER, ŞESOB and GAPTAEM. The priorities were identified out of the outputs of this comprehensive workshop and activities were organized in accordance with them. Employability opportunities and vocational training subjects were assessed based on desk-review of regional development plans, labour market information, skills mapping and labour absorption reports as well.
These vocational training and competency improvement activities were developed on agriculture, industry and services sectors and are distinguished with Turkish courses combined with life skills trainings.
“Strengthening Social Stability in Southeast Anatolia Project”, financed by the Government of Japan, is implemented by UNDP and GAP Regional Development Administration, in Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Kilis and Hatay provinces. The overall project has the budget over $ 6,3 million USD in total and is expected to end up in March, 2018. The other component of the project aims social infrastructure support to local authorities/municipalities, as well as to fill the gap, which is identified/communicated, in terms of strengthening the municipal capacities for public services and creating public areas/social zones.
