    1.1 The facts

At present:

  • Total official death toll 18,100 (as of 3.12.99)
  • Number of reported injured stands at over 48,947
  • Number of homes and buildings collapsed or heavily damaged 310,361

Islamic Relief's Response

19th August - 10th December 1999

IR responded by sending in 350 winterised tents. These tents have since been made use of as part of a Turkish Red Crescent run tent city in the town of Adapzari. Besides tents, other relief items have been distributed. The total of IR aid programme so far reaches over $350,000

2.1 Summary of IR aid:

  • 350 tents
  • 230 plastic fly sheets to make tents winterised
  • 3500 Food boxes
  • 3100 Hygiene packs
  • 700 wooden (floor) pallets
  • 795 blankets
  • Truck of clothing, baby food, and 4 refrigerators
  • 50 cartons of medical items
  • Nappies and baby food
  • 129 boxes of child nutritional food
  • Food sacks

2.2 This week's activities:

During the past week a further 850 food boxes have been distributed in Adapzari and Duzce
370 hygeine packs have also been distributed in the same areas in this past week

2.3 Recent activities:

  • 2000 Hygiene packs purchased
  • Cost of hygiene packs $37,176
  • 370 Hygiene packs distributed so far, the remaining to be distributed over Ramadhan

  • Approximately 1000 food boxes distributed in Adapzari and Duzce (the most recently hit earthquake area) so far
  • Food boxes reached over 5000 beneficiaries, (1000 families)
