Islamic Relief commits $150,000 for Turkey

On the morning of February the 3rd 2002 Turkey was struck by a series of earthquakes, the strongest quake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. The province of Afyon was home to the epicenter and worst hit sustaining widespread damage.
Approximately 45 people are reported to be killed and over 300 injured. Thousands of people spent Monday night outdoors in freezing conditions and many people continue to sleep outside in the cold winter temperatures because their homes have been damaged or destroyed, or because they are afraid to be inside in the event of another earthquake or severe aftershock.

Reports suggest that over 400 houses have been destroyed in addition to many businesses and other properties.

Islamic Relief has allocated $150,000 with the view of implementing short and long-term projects in Turkey.

Following the previous earthquake in Turkey on the 17th of August 1999, Islamic Relief implemented a project valued at over $182,000 in which approximately 23,000 people benefited from food, non-food items, hygiene kits and tents.
