Appeal Target: US$ 1,666,400
Geneva, 29 November 1999
After suffering a massive earthquake on 17 August earlier this year, which left death and destruction in its wake, north-west Turkey has again been struck by a second seism on November 12, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre in D=FCzce. Fortunately, the destruction was not as comprehensive as after the previous quake and the authorities were also quickly on the scene with immediate assistance. However, the area suffered 95 - 100% destruction of buildings, many of which had already been damaged in the first quake. There is thus a desperate and urgent need for basic facilities, especially shelter, as temperatures are below freezing during the nights.
ACT members, Dutch Interchurch Aid (DIA) and the Christian Churches in Turkey (TACT) are proposing assistance in the form of shelter, sanitation facilities, mattresses and bedding, as well as restoring water supplies to a village of 7,000 that has lost its water source.
