Operational Updates

ADAPT project: Building technical expertise for Sustainable Development in the Agriculture and Artisanal Fisheries Sector in Tunisia

  • In February, WFP organized a series of training sessions for school cooks identified by the government’s School Works Office (OOESCO). Forty-eight cooks were trained with the objective of bolstering their technical expertise and empowering them to effectively address the nutritional and dietary requirements of schoolchildren. These sessions emphasized the importance of adhering to hygiene regulations and standards, ensuring safe and secure delivery of food to schoolchildren.

Strengthening the resilience of the National School Meals Programmes

  • In February, WFP conducted a gardening workshop for 300 schoolchildren through its cooperating partner, the Tunisian Environmental Agriculture Association (ATAE). Key government representatives from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and OOESCO also attended. Reflecting a commitment to food education and sustainability at governmental and organizational levels, the workshop aimed to help school and education leaders foster environments that raise awareness among schoolchildren over principles of plant cultivation and garden maintenance.
  • Partnering with the Japanese government, in March 2024, WFP signed a Field Level Agreement with the Tunisian Union of Social Solidarity (UTSS) - a non-governmental organization - to enhance the national school meals programme in four schools located in Kairouan city. Through this partnership, support activities will aim to rehabilitate school canteens, revitalise school vegetable gardens, and create nutritional and environmental education clubs to raise awareness about nutritious diets among children and promote community participation.
  • In collaboration with the Principality of Monaco, WFP is revitalizing five school gardens across three governorates in Tunisia (Zaghouan, Bizerte, and Jendouba) where the first harvests of seasonal vegetables have already appeared in the Sejnene garden in Bizerte. The fresh vegetable produce from the gardens helps school canteens serve over 1,000 school children with healthy and nutritious meals.
