Tonga: Dengue Fever Outbreak: Situation Report #56 - 2nd June 2025

Highlights

  • From the last SitRep, 9 new cases reported with positive rapid test, which brings up the total cumulative DF cases to 824.
  • Majority of confirmed cases from Tongatapu (444), Vava’u (311), ‘Eua (65) and Haápai (4).
  • A total of 3 cases are currently hospitalized, (2 Vaiola, 1 Niuéiki). They are all in STABLE condition.
  • 3 dengue-related death reported to date. No new death reported as of today.
  • Age group mostly affected is 10-19 years old. Youngest age affected is a 2 months old baby.
  • Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.

Response Activities

  • Ongoing case investigation and vector control to hot spot and high risk areas.

Recommendations for the Public

  1. Continue to clean up and destroy mosquito breeding sites around the HOME and SCHOOLS. Empty old tyres and standing water containers regularly, minimum once a week.
  2. Wear appropriate clothing to minimize mosquito bites and use mosquito nets and repellents such as lotion and spray.
  3. While majority of dengue cases are mild and show no symptoms, the illness can become severe. Watch out for symptoms – High Fever (40°C) accompanied by two or more of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, body ache and rash.
  4. Even after the fever has gone away, seek immediate medical assistance if you or someone has severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, vomiting blood, rapid breathing, fatigue/restlessness.
