Highlights
- As of today, 9 new cases reported with positive rapid test, which brings up the total cumulative DF cases to 284.
- Majority of confirmed cases from Vava’u (159), the rest from Tongatapu (91) and ‘Eua (34).
- A total of 10 cases are currently hospitalized (5 Prince Ngu, 4 Niu’eiki, 1 Vaiola). All in stable condition. The 22yr old pregnant mother with DF is now discharged home.
- No dengue-related death reported to date.
- Age group mostly affected is 10-19 years old. Youngest age affected is a 7 months old baby boy.
- Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.
Response Activities
- Ongoing case investigation and vector control to hot spot and high risk areas, and awareness programs to communities including the FWC Folaha, FWC Nukuhetulu and SDA Haásini in Tongatapu; Free Church of Tonga Neiafu, LDS Vahe Hihifo and City Impact Church Toula in Vavaú.
- The Ministry appreciates the ongoing support from the people and communities, Government Ministries and NGOs, and stakeholders, as well as the continuous technical supports from WHO and UNICEF.
Recommendations for the Public
1. Continue to clean up and destroy mosquito breeding sites around the HOME and SCHOOLS.
2. Wear appropriate clothing to minimize mosquito bites.
3. Use mosquito nets and repellents such as lotion and spray.
4. If you are sick, watch out for severe symptoms and seek medical attention immediately.
