ROK Government to Provide Humanitarian Assistance worth US$100,000 to Cyclone-hit Tonga

  1. The government of the Republic of Korea has decided to provide humanitarian assistance worth US$100,000 to Tonga, where Cyclone Gita caused severe damage on February 12, through the Tonga Red Cross.

o It is estimated that Cyclone Gita, the most powerful in Tonga’s 60-year history, has left 1 person dead, 33 injured, about 4,500 displaced and more than 1,250 houses destroyed or damaged. It is difficult to estimate exactly how much damage the cyclone inflicted on some islands due to poor communications.

  1. The ROK government’s assistance is expected to contribute to bringing stability to the lives of the displaced staying in evacuation shelters as early as possible by providing them with daily necessities.
