Official handing over of disaster equipment from the Government of Japan

02 June 2015 Official handover of disaster equipment received under the Non-project Grant Aid (NPGA) for the Provision of Japanese SME’s Products 2013 at the NEMO office.

The Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, H.E Mr. Yukio Numata ,today June 2nd 2015, officially handover to the Tongan Government, the disaster equipment that has been received under the Non-project Grant Aid (NPGA) of Japan at the NEMO warehouse in Vaololoa. The Ambassador acknowledged that the equipment received and hand over today to the Government of Tonga came through the Japan’s Non-project grant aid for provision of Japanese small and medium sized enterprises products. He further stated, “Our Governments formalized the provision of equipment worth 200 million Japanese yen, equivalent to 3.6 million pa’anga, in February 2014, right after the devastating Cyclone Ian, to assist Tonga’s development efforts, including enhancing its disaster preparedness.”

The Acting Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, represented the Government at the ceremony as he officially receiving the multimillion dollars’ worth of equipment donated by the Government of Japan. The equipment received consisted of:

Desalination Plants
Water Pumps
Tents
Speakers with Sirens (loud hailer)
Chainsaws
Emergency Tools
Water Tanks

The Government of Tonga also recognized some of the most recent assistance by the Government of Japan to NEMO on Disaster Risk Management which included:

1 . Project on e-Disaster

In March 2014, marked the completion and commissioning of the early warning tsunami siren system, funded by the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) in Bangkok through financial contribution from the Government of Japan.

c. JICA Group Training on Strategy for Resilient Societies to Natural Disasters
