5th Update - Flood Mitigation: Atenisi Area, Kolomotu’a

17 April 2014 NEMO continued its flood mitigation operation in the Atenisi overnight finishing at 11.00 hrs today (17 April). Several ponds of water remain, but overall the water level is the lowest it has been since February.

The operation was staffed by Tonga Fire Services and supported by NEMO personnel. School community members provided food and drinks during the night rotation.

The total amount of water pumped out of the Atenisi area since the operation started on 11 April is estimated to be 4.5 million litres.

As noted in the previous Situation Report, an inter-agency meeting will be held on Tuesday 22 April to consider options for a more sustainable solution to landlocked flooding in the Kolomotu’a area.
