1. ACCORDING TO A PRELIMINARY REPORT PREPARED BY A UN MISSION (WHO,UNICEF,DHA/UNDP) THE FLASH FLOODS OF 3 AND 4 JULY AFFECTED 29 LOME DISTRICTS AND RENDERED 75,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS, OF WHICH 71% ARE WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

2. THE MOST AFFECTED DISTRICTS ARE :

THE TOTALITY OF THE DISTRICTS DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC SEWAGE SYSTEM, NO RUNNING WATER, NO PUBLIC DRINKING-FOUNTAINS, NO ELECTRICITY AND NO SANITATION PUBLIC SERVICE. THE ABNORMAL RAIN FALL DURING THE MONTHS OF JUNE AND JULY AGRAVATED BY THE INEFICIENCY OF THE CITY WATER PUMPING SYSTEM, JUST ACCELERATED THE FLOODING OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED DISTRICTS.

3. THE SANITARY CONDITIONS ARE EXTREMELY PRECARIOUS AND THE AUTHORITIES FEAR AN OUTBREAK OF ENDEMIC DISEASES. FROM 10 TO 17 JULY 54 CASES OF SERIOUS DIARRHOEA WERE DETECTED, OF WHICH 26 WERE CONFIRMED. 6 PEOPLE DIED. THE IDENTIFIED GERM IS A VIBRIO OF THE TYPE OGAWA.

MOBIL AND REGULAR MEDICAL TEAMS HAVE BEEN ORGANIZED BUT THEY ARE FACING A SERIOUS SHORTAGE OF MEDICINES, DISINFECTION PRODUCTS AND EQUIPMENT.

4. THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS IDENTIFIED CONCERN:

  • REPAIRING OF THE MAIN WATER PUMPING STATIONS
  • CLEARING OF THE MAIN GUTTERS AND RAIN WATER COLLECTORS
  • ENSURING THE DISTRIBUTION OF DRINKING WATER TO THE VICTIMS
  • DISINFECTION OF THE AFFECTED AREAS
  • DISINFECTION OF THE WELLS DRINKING WATER
  • FOOD
  • MEDICINES AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES
  • CLOTHES(FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN)
  • SHELTER/TENTS
  • LOGISTICS FOR THE TEMPORARY RELOCATION OF THE VICTIMS

DHA IS PREPARED TO SERVE AS CHANNEL FOR CASH CONTRIBUTIONS TO BE USED DURING IMMEDIATE RELIEF PHASE. FUNDS ARE SPENT IN COORDINATION WITH RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS OF U.N. SYSTEM, AND DHA PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH WRITTEN CONFIRMATION ON UTILIZATION OF FUNDS CONTRIBUTED.
