23 June 2006, Dili - Sukehiro Hasegawa, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Timor-Leste today called upon all Timorese to reject attempts to divide the nation.
In a message broadcast on national radio, Hasegawa urged Timorese to, "Remain resilient to any efforts to divide you. ...Maintaining national unity is paramount."
Violence that broke out in late April has forced some 145,000 internally displaced persons into makeshift camps. Much of the violence has been attributed to an alleged east-west divide among Timorese, who won their independence as a nation in May of 2002.
Hasegawa said, "You, the Timorese people, have to defend your hard-won freedom and your so recently gained independence. You need to continue striving towards true nationhood and do not let anyone take you off that path."
He said the international community, needs to reflect about what has happened and renew its commitment to assist the nascent democratic state to continue building solid foundations of nationhood. He said the United Nations in the coming months and years in Timor-Leste should be addressing the root causes of the conflict which is essential to regain the trust and confidence of the people.
He said foremost, justice has to prevail for all. Justice should not only bring out the truth but should result in healing and reconciliation, he said.
"The international community stands ready to assist the Timorese in this task with a view to restoring peace and security in the country," he said.
Hasegawa said the international community should ensure that the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections are held, "in a free, fair and credible manner."
He said a new appeal for humanitarian funds for Timor-Leste had been answered with generous pledges of support.
"The road to nationhood can be full of obstacles", he said. "However, do not lose heart! The United Nations will remain committed to assist Timor-Leste until this young democratic state stands firmly on its own feet."
